350.org
Bill McKibben is an influential author and most recently founder of this movement, which has successfully united college students to pressure their college administrations to divest out of harmful industries, such as natural resources extraction.

Move To Amend
An ambitious movement for a constitutional amendment to prohibit corporations from being afforded the same rights given to individuals. This crucial legislation battles one of the most pernicious traits of American society throughout the past 3 years – the ability of corporations to essentially buy elections out. This climate emerged as a direct result of the Supreme Court’s ruling in January 2010 in favor of Citizens United, a conservative group lobbying for no limits on campaign spending by corporations and labor unions .

Center for the Advancement of a Steady-State Economy (CASSE)
The organization with the largest collection of diverse ideas and resources about the steady state movement. There are primers on steady-state basics, FAQs, videos, ideas about actions to take and links to regional chapters of the organizsation. I especially like the Questions for Conventional Economists and the Humor pages.

Great Baikal Trail

One of the last relatively unexploited frontiers is the central Siberian part of Russia around Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal is the oldest and deepest lake in the world. It is also one of the most voluminous. Lake Baikal is home to over 3000 endemic species, including the world’s only freshwater seal. Baikal is magical all seasons round and is a tourist’s dream. The Big Baikal Trail is conducting a long-term, volunteer-driven project to build a series of ecologically-friendly trails around Lake Baikal.

Books:
Beyond Growth: The Economics of Sustainable Development
Beyond Growth
Herman Daly has spent his whole career as an economist laying out the theoretical framework for a steady-state, truly sustainable economy. This book is a theoretical economics overview of these ideas. I anticipate I will be quoting Beyond Growth quite a fair bit as I delve into dissecting how the economy currently works and offering alternatives.

Enough Is Enough: Building a Sustainable Economy in a World of Finite ResourcesEnough Is Enough
This comprehensive book about what’s not working in our current economy and how to make it better has had a profound impact on me. After reading and ruminating on the multitude of ideas, I concluded that I will focus on the ideas proposed in Chapter 8 on reforming the financial system. Number 1 priority – change the banking system to full-reserve requirements and thereby eliminate the absolute need for economic growth.

The Responsible Company: What We've Learned From Patagonia's First 40 Years
The Responsible Company
Written by Yovn Chounaird, the founder and owner of Patagonia, this book is about Patagonia’s path to a unique position in the retail market. Patagonia is one of the few companies in the world that is truly committed to making products that last, caring for their workers and those of their suppliers and trying to reduce environmental impact from operations. Not many company leaders will admit that despite the best efforts, the true cost of any economic activity will be more than its sticker price.

People:
Yeb Sano
The Philippines’ representatives to the United Nations Climate Talks. Mr. Sano made an impassioned plea during the UN Climate Negotiations in Doha in December 2012 in the aftermath of Typhoon Bopha. Unfortunately, little was done. The most recent climate talks came at an auspicious time, just days after the most devastating, powerful typhoon in the history of the country hit the Philippines yet again. Typhoon Haian killed over 10,000 people and displaced millions when it made landfall on November 8, 2013. Yeb Sano made a poignant speech at the Warsaw Climate Talks on November 11 and declared a hunger strike until a significant action to deal with the climate catastrophe is decided upon.

Paddy Hirsch
The editor for Marketplace, a news organization focusing on business/economics news. Paddy’s talent is the ability to explain complex economic concepts in simple terms using amusing drawings.

Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement
John Lewis
One of the most influential figures in the United State Civil Rights movement. John Lewis is a living example of how to live without compromising your ideals. His resolve in marching, sitting-in, and riding on buses to protest against the most blatant injustices, despite physical harm to himself, is inspiring. John Lewis always carried the spirit of non-violence and love for all people, even his enemies, despite countless setbacks throughout his life. John Lewis is currently a US Congressman representing Atlanta, Georgia.
